Getting
your OARS in the Water:
From the Basics
we Build Monuments
It has been shown that our
minds flicker, jumping from one train of thought to another
about every 6 seconds! That’s somewhere in the neighborhood of
10,000 jumps per day. 10,000 times every day our minds leap
from one topic to another, back and forth, leaving one train of
thought and jumping to another, leaving and returning, over and
over. Even very focused and directed individuals do this.
We want to make use of this natural phenomenon by inserting
these two key phrases into this jump pattern: “Focus on
Fundamentals” and “Back to Basics”. As you grow your
personal power, you’ll use these two phrases to tune your mind
and focus repeatedly.
Tuning your mind is similar to
tuning any instrument. Like a guitar, there are many
correct tunings for the different types of play. “Focus on
Fundamentals” becomes the reminder which jumps into the
mind, re-focusing it, asking us to tune into the way we want to
be. Focus on Fundamentals: “Likes align and congeal, What
am I being like?” While the other key phrase, "Back to
Basics" reminds us of what we do next.
Defining the
Basics: OARS
A
boat without OARS is adrift, subject to the whimsy of the
fundamental principle. It will simply coast and drift to
wherever all others without means of motivation go. It
will align and congeal with all others who do not guide
themselves, who do not row! Motivation, is a neat word, it means
both the desire to move towards a goal as well as indicating the
means of movement, in this case, the OARS.
So you've learned how to focus on
fundamentals, you've learned to pause, ask yourself, "What am I
being like? What do I want to be like?" Then what?
What do you do after you've decided what you want to be like?
You get “Back to Basics!”
So what are the basics? Back
to Basics - get your OARS in the water and start rowing
towards your goals! First focus on fundamentals, then
get Back to Basics! Our studies revealed an amazing thing;
successful people all had a similar version of the same basic
thing. A similar version of an oar which they could use to
propel themselves towards that which they desired. An oar which
they could use to guide themselves away from negative things and
towards desirable things.
Outcome -
Action -
Repeat -
Start Over
Back
to Basics means determine your Outcome – Take Action
towards it – Repeat that action – Start Again. An
OAR is a simple thing, simply use it to propel a boat or craft
forward. It is intuitive and requires no instructions.
It's no different in using your OARS to create the life of your
dreams, simply pick your outcome, take action towards it, take
that action again, and again, then start over. Using an
OAR isn't magic or difficult, just repetitive, repeatedly taking
action towards a desired outcome. Focus on Fundamentals to
determine what you want to be like, then get your OARS in the
water by taking action towards a desired outcome.
There's nothing magic
or complex here. Once again, it is so simple as to be
elusive. Your mind is going to natural flicker from one
thought to another. We want to insert the phrase, "Back to Basics" into that flickering. Every time you catch
yourself existing, you say to yourself, "Let's get back to
Basics! Let's get our OARS in the water and start rowing!"
It doesn't matter what the goal is, or where you are in relation
to the goal, what matters is that you make progress towards the
goal, little by little bringing yourself closer to your living
dream by: First - Get a clear image of the Outcome
you desire. Second - Take Action towards it. Third -
Repeat (take the same action again, if they action seems to
be working, do the same thing again, if it didn’t seem to get
you closer then go to step four). Forth - Start Over
means to clearly see the desired outcome, figure out an action
you can take towards it, take the action, take the action again
and again, then start over again. Rowing a boat isn't a
mystical thing, it is simple and straightforward, and most
importantly, it works!
An Example of Fundamentals and Basics:
Imagine
a temple high on a mountaintop, you’re at the bottom of the
mountain and you want to reach the temple. There are three
staircases leading upwards. One of them leads to the
Temple, one leads a village, and one leads a lake on the side of
the mountain. They are each labeled, but you don't read the
language. What do you do?
First, Focus on Fundamentals:
"Likes Align and Congeal, what am I being like? What do
I
want to be like?" Knowing what you know about the
fundamental property of the universe, you can now put it to work
for you. You are an expert at using the Fundamental Principle
and you decide, “I am being like a person on an adventure to
a Temple.” In this example you’re in the middle of nowhere,
don’t speak the language and are fairly lost. There’s no one
around and you need to get to the Temple before Sun down. So
you decide to get “Back to Basics” and put your OARS
in the water. You focus on the Outcome you desire: "I will
sleep at the Temple tonight, and you take the simplest Action
you can think of, you take a step towards the Temple." You
don’t know which staircase leads towards it, so you pick the one
that looks best and take a step. You don’t actually even know
if you got closer! But you took an action and that’s a start
in the right direction.
The
stairway carved from the mountainside stretches out before you,
OARS – Outcome, Action, now Repeat! Take that action
again, take another step! Again and again! But you still don’t
know if you’re getting closer or further away. But you do know
you’re getting closer even if you’re getting further away!
You’re getting closer because you are taking action towards your
goal. You see the outcome in your mind, you decided on an
action, and you’re now repeating that action over and over. You
may have to repeat it thousands of times just realize you went
the wrong way! You arrive in the village instead of the Temple,
but it doesn’t matter, you got closer to your outcome in time,
even if you are further away from it in space.
Ew, that might be a little
confusing. Closer in time, further in space? In terms of time,
you’ve seen the outcome, “I will arrive at the Temple before
the sun goes down.” It’s closer to sundown now, and since
you know the outcome, you are in truth closer to your goal! The
only problem is, you’re actions brought you further away from
your outcome in physical space! But you have strong OARS,
you clear your head, focus on the Outcome again, and decide on a
new action: Walk back down the steps and try one of the other
paths. You turn around and take action again. It makes perfect
sense, you were lost and frustrated, now you’re still lost,
further from your goal, and more frustrated. Wait!
First: Focus on Fundamentals!
"Likes Align and Congeal: What are you being like? What do
you want to be like?" This step makes all the difference in
the world. You’ve got to see what you are being like, you’ve
got to determine what you want to be like and then be it! If
you haven’t mastered the Fundamentals you say,
“I’m
being like a lost confused tourist in the middle of nowhere.”
But, instead let’s say you’re an expert at the fundamentals and
you decide, “I am being like an adventurer! I’m having fun and
got closer to my goal. There’s some unexpected adventure here
in this village waiting for me!” You get excited instead of
frustrated and open yourself up to an unexpected possibility.
Almost instantly a villager approaches you speaking English!
You tell them you are on your way to the Temple but a little off
course, “Is there a shortcut from here or do I have to walk down
the path again?” you ask smiling. The local is excited to meet
a stranger, and tells you, “The shortcut is too difficult to
explain and you’ll surely get lost on the mountainside, but
there is one monk who be going there before sunset to pray,
maybe you can go with him.”
The villager takes you to their
house and introduces you. This monk speaks no English, but your
new found friend translates for you and explains,
“He
says his happy to show you the way, but his horses are resting
and he isn’t leaving for another hour. I’d like you to come have
lunch with me and then we’ll return in an hour.” “Horses?” you
ask. “Yes,” your new friend explains, “You’ll be traveling on
yak if you go with him, or you can walk back down the path, and
walk back up the mountain, you’ll still get there by sundown
either way.”
You
see the Outcome clearly, you arrive at the Temple by Sundown, in
style. You take action towards it: Have lunch with your new
friend and their family, in style…
Outcome – Action – Repeat – Start
Again. Just like using the oars in a rowboat, over and over you
dip your oar in the water propelling yourself towards your
desired goal. Sometimes you use your oars to steer, sometimes to
move you forward, over and over you take action towards your
desired outcome.
If you’re an expert at the
fundamentals, you can use them to draw all sorts of great things
along the way. If you’re terrible at the fundamentals, well,
then you’ll learn to use them to your advantage over time. In
either case, you’ll still reach your goals by getting your oars
in the water. See the Outcome, take Action
towards it, Repeat the action again, Start over,
see the outcome, take action towards it, repeat the action
again, start over, see the outcome…
